Advances in the Specialty of Preventive Medicine
Chair: Aristotle Sun, MD, MPH, FACPM
Vice Chair: Jordan Gildehaus, MD
Prevention First: Elevating the Visibility, Voice, and Leadership of the Specialty
Preventive medicine physicians are uniquely positioned to lead healthcare transformation across clinical care, public health, policy, academia, government, and industry. This track focuses on strengthening the specialty by advancing workforce development, education, advocacy, leadership, and innovative models of practice.
As healthcare systems increasingly recognize the importance of prevention, preventive medicine must have a stronger voice in shaping policy, financing, workforce development, and systems design. Sessions will explore how the specialty can expand its visibility, demonstrate its value, and prepare future leaders who can transform healthcare.
Objectives:
- Examine emerging opportunities in Artificial Intelligence, health systems leadership, and healthcare transformation.
- Advance education, residency training, certification, and workforce development in preventive medicine.
- Address workforce challenges including provider burnout, retention, and wellness culture.
- Explore strategies to increase recognition and visibility of the specialty.
- Strengthen physician advocacy, communication, leadership, and policy engagement.
- Highlight career pathways across healthcare systems, government, academia, and industry.
Clinical Preventive Medicine
Chair: Case Keltner, MD, MPH, MS
Vice Chair: Ryan Moran, MD, MPH, MBA, FACPM
Prevention First: Transforming Healthcare from Treatment to Health Creation
The future of healthcare depends on shifting from a system designed primarily to treat disease to one designed to maintain and improve health. This track focuses on integrating the science and practice of prevention into clinical care through evidence-based screening, immunizations, lifestyle interventions, nutrition, addiction medicine, chronic disease prevention, and individualized risk reduction.
Sessions will explore how preventive medicine physicians can increase the visibility and value of prevention within healthcare systems through innovations in clinical delivery, artificial intelligence, digital health, coding and billing, quality measurement, and value-based care. By connecting clinical practice with population health goals, this track highlights how prevention can become a foundation of healthcare delivery.
Objectives:
- Present up-to-date science and clinical practice innovations in preventive medicine.
- Explore strategies to integrate preventive services into routine clinical care.
- Highlight lifestyle medicine, nutrition, addiction medicine, immunization strategies, and chronic disease prevention.
- Discuss role of payors including reimbursement, coding, billing, quality measures, and value-based care approaches that support prevention.
- Examine emerging technologies, including AI and digital health, that enhance preventive care delivery.
- Demonstrate the measurable value of prevention for patients, providers, and health systems.
Community, Population, and Public Health
Chair: Devin Kelly, DO, MPH&TM
Vice Chair: Alankrita Olson, MD, MPH
Prevention First: Building Healthier Communities and Population Systems
Health is shaped long before a patient enters a clinic. This track explores how preventive medicine physicians can lead the transformation of communities and population health systems by addressing the root causes of disease and creating environments that support lifelong health. Sessions will highlight evidence-based prevention strategies, community partnerships, governmental, and local/state/national public health initiatives, health policy, emergency preparedness, injury prevention, violence prevention, and system-level interventions that improve health outcomes.
By strengthening connections among healthcare systems, public health agencies, community organizations, and other sectors, this track demonstrates the value of prevention beyond individual care and highlights the voice of preventive medicine physicians as leaders in population health transformation.
Objectives:
- Showcase innovative, evidence-based approaches that improve population health and reduce disparities.
- Explore how preventive medicine physicians can strengthen partnerships between healthcare, public health, businesses, and communities.
- Highlight policy and systems changes that address the root causes of disease.
- Examine strategies for community preparedness, emergency response, injury prevention, violence prevention, and emerging public health threats.
- Demonstrate the impact of prevention through measurable outcomes, quality improvement, and health equity.
Global, Environmental, Occupational, and Planetary Health
Chair: Malika Garg, MD, MS, FACPM
Vice Chair: Will Douthitt, MD, MPH
Prevention First: Protecting Health in an Interconnected World
The health of individuals and communities is inseparable from the health of our environment, workplaces, and global systems. This track examines how preventive medicine physicians address complex challenges through environmental health, occupational medicine, global health, climate resilience, and planetary health approaches.
Sessions will explore climate change, toxic exposures, occupational safety, aerospace medicine, emerging infectious diseases, disaster preparedness, and global health threats. Through collaboration across disciplines and borders, this track elevates the visibility of preventive medicine, amplifies its voice in addressing global and environmental health challenges, and highlights the value of prevention in anticipating threats, building resilience, and protecting health before disease occurs.
Objectives:
- Examine global and environmental health challenges through a prevention-first lens.
- Explore the health impacts of climate change, environmental exposures, and toxicology.
- Highlight occupational medicine, workplace safety, aerospace medicine, and worker health initiatives.
- Discuss emerging infectious diseases, surveillance, preparedness, and response strategies.
- Advance One Health and Planetary Health approaches that connect human, animal, and environmental health.
- Demonstrate how preventive medicine physicians provide leadership in addressing emerging health threats.
